St Charles park district

Our Story

The St. Charles Park District maintains 56 parks and plans senior, adult, teen, and youth recreation activities year-round. Paddle boats, Pottawatomie Park Swimming Pool, River View Miniature Golf Course, Pottawatomie Golf Course, soccer, boat rentals, summer camps, sports camps, Concerts in the Park, Pottawatomie Preschool, dance, arts and crafts, and gymnastics keep Park District staff and residents busy!

Our Park District was awarded the 1998 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management by the Sports Foundation, Inc. and the National Recreation and Park Association. This award is the highest and most prestigious honor attainable by a park and recreation agency in the United States.

The St. Charles Park District offers its residents 12 Mini Parks, 15 Neighborhood Parks, 10 Community Parks, 10 Natural Areas, 7 Special Use Sites, and five trails, corridors, and linear parks/greenways.

Parks and Open Space

Natural resources, environmental features, parks, and open spaces are all critical components of St. Charles and contribute significantly to the overall quality of life for City residents. Public parks and open spaces provide places for residents and visitors to recreate and enjoy nature, are integral to the health and well-being of the community, and celebrate the City’s history and personality. Neighborhood parks allow children a place to play without being driven and provide the community with a nearby, central gathering place for picnics, sports, and other activities. The Fox River, a focal point for the entire City, ties the whole system together.

St. Charles has many significant environmental features such as streams, wetlands, and wooded areas that add significantly to the community’s character. These elements that occur without human intervention play a vital role in designing and cultivating city parks. The City recognizes the value of these assets and seeks to protect and enhance them. Sustain-able techniques for building, maintaining, and operating all aspects of the City are present throughout the Comprehensive Plan. Still, the Parks and Open Space Plan proposes particular recommendations for sustainable, “green” initiatives.
